Relationship breakdown

When a relationship ends, there are all sorts of emotional and practical challenges to work through. Dealing with a separation can be tough, and that’s why our family law solicitors will work with you to secure the best outcome for you while easing the emotional burden you are facing.

We will help you with:

  • Divorce
  • Civil partnership dissolution
  • Unmarried couples’ separation
  • Financial arrangements

At Owen White Catlin, we will look for the most constructive and cost-effective way of resolving conflict and disputes. Sometimes this is achieved through mediation or other forms of alternative dispute resolution; other times it may be necessary to involve the family court. Whichever route we take, you can rely on us to stand by your side and tirelessly advocate for your interests.

Why work with our family solicitors?

Our family law team are firmly established as the trusted solicitors of individuals and families throughout South West London, Surrey and Middlesex. We have a great deal of experience in handling all aspects of relationship breakdown and family law as a whole, so can offer you advice and support that is tailored to your circumstances.

We are members of Resolution, a network of family law professionals which promotes a non-confrontational approach to resolving family legal matters. This highlights our commitment to exploring any alternative solutions to disputes, helping to minimise the emotional and financial burdens you and your family could face.

We understand the value of good service, so we only work in a way that feels right to both us and our clients. No matter what your case involves and the level of support you require, we communicate clearly, openly and honestly, so you receive regular updates on how your case is progressing.

We are transparent when it comes to legal fees. Rest assured that we will discuss the most cost-effective options that apply to your case so you are able to manage the fees you will have to pay.

We offer legal aid funding for specified family law matters. However, please be aware that legal aid is quite restricted. It is available free of charge for parents involved in public law proceedings (care proceedings). For other matters, eligibility for legal aid will depend on the type of matter, departure rules, and means testing, such as for domestic violence, private law children, and financial issues. To find out more about your eligibility for legal aid, or if you are concerned about the cost of legal advice or representation, please speak to our team. If you are eligible, we will assist you with the legal aid application process and discuss the various options available to you.

We have expert solicitors and support teams working at each of our offices, so it’s easy to get in touch – in person, by phone or online - when you need us.

Our relationship breakdown services

Divorce

Divorce is often a very difficult decision, but it’s not always a straightforward process. In many cases, there will be a range of challenges for people who want to move on from their relationship quickly, inexpensively and on terms that work for them and for their children.

Our family law solicitors will do everything to help you with a divorce application, finding the most effective ways to resolve issues and protecting your interests from start to finish.

Civil partnership dissolution

The equivalent of divorce for civil partners is dissolution and marks the end of the legal relationship. Whatever the circumstances of the separation, the dissolution process will be difficult at times for those at the centre of it as they unpick their finances and look to agree arrangements for assets and for their children.

Our experienced family law team are trusted advisors, offering clear advice and a route to resolution that best suits each client’s situation.

Unmarried couples’ separation

Living together may feel like a marriage or civil partnership, but in law, it’s very different. The idea of a ‘common law marriage’ is no more than a myth in England and Wales, meaning cohabitees have far fewer rights than spouses or civil partners.

But people often only discover this after their relationship has broken down, by which time it may be too late to lay claim to assets. Our family law solicitors work with cohabitees to negotiate fair separation arrangements.

Financial arrangements

Sorting out finances is often the most complex part of the post-separation process. Our family law solicitors deal with the full range of situations, from the relatively straightforward, to complex family finances involving investments, businesses and overseas assets.

We have close relationships with actuaries, accountants and IFAs whose financial expertise supplements our legal advice and support.
